ECO CERTIFIED, Nautilus Resort Rarotonga ‘Mana Tiaki 2019’

Sustainability Without Compromising Pacific Luxury

Rarotonga’s luxury beachfront resort, Nautilus Resort has been formally recognized as Eco Certified, within the Cook Island’s own sustainable tourism commitment – The ‘Mana Tiaki 2019’ program.  Launched earlier this year, Nautilus is one of the first luxury resorts in the Cook Islands to attain this certification, which ensures standards have been established at the resort to embed biodiversity consideration and sustainable practices efforts into the everyday operations now and into the future.

Opened in late 2014, Nautilus Resort is designed and built to the high standards of ecological sustainability. This 17 villa, boutique beachfront resort was built with sustainability at the forefront — UV treated and filtered drinking water, full recycling and filter systems for grey water  and organic fruit and vegetable gardens —  make this one of the most forward thinking, luxury eco-build in the Cook Islands to date. Since opening, worm farms have been added and extensive garden beds for herbs and salad greens have been added to existing gardens. All food waste is sorted and used in worm farms, for compost or taken to feed local pigs, coffee grind is used in the garden for mulching and the green waste from trees and hedges is mulched and used to mix in with our soil and compost. Continuous planting of indigenous plants through the resort and border plants that prevent erosion as well as run off from our property going into the sea. Finally, NO PLASTIC BOTTLES are sold in our bars, we only offer beverages from glass.

Nautilus Resort is pure South Pacific beachfront luxury on Rarotonga’s white-sanded Muri Beach. Choose Polynesian inspired one, two- or three-bedroom villas (are) each with private salt-water plunge pool, air conditioning, luxurious bathroom, kitchen/ette, entertainment system and big furnished patio. Just 20 minutes from Rarotonga’s international airport, the 4.5 star rated Nautilus also features a Polynesian Spa and a Kids’ Concierge service, and excellent water sports making it ideal for everything from family holidays to weddings and honeymoons. Nautilus award winning Restaurant’s cuisine is Polynesian — European fusion, using our own and local seasonal ingredients, with an emphasis on fresh harvests from the Pacific.

Nautilus Responsible Tourism Practices:

ENERGY: The resort owners are currently in talks with the country’s electricity board to move towards being 100% solar, in the near future. This move is in line with the resorts sister resort, Muri Beach Resort, which is currently 100% off the grid, with a large solar system operating for resort power supply.  

WATER: Purified water is supplied for guest consumption by using deep purification systems of the local water. NO PLASTIC BOTTLES are sold in our bars, we only offer beverages in glass.

BUILD: The resorts elegant, ecology-inspired architectural style is Polynesian with timber, reed and stone finishes echoing the natural beauty and simplicity of the South Pacific. Care was taken in the design of the resort to ensure air flow, cooling and natural light within the villas (ares) and resort buildings with key cards for air conditioning that cut off when guests depart villas. With sustainability at the forefront of the build this is the most forward thinking, luxury eco-build in the Cook Islands.

RECYCLING: Near 100% of the refuse from the resort is recycled and constant and regular monitoring is done monthly. The waste is processed onsite or recycled. Plastic, glass and paper is collected and supplied to recovery/recycling plants. Greywater is run through filters and then through trickle irrigation to enhance plant life. Innovation is used to minimize waste production from guests by introducing – reusable water bottles, providing cloth beach bags.

HABITAT: Continual planting programs. Continuous planting of indigenous plants through the resort and border plants that prevent erosion as well as run off from our property going into the sea.
